Who’s Getting Dumped On?

After a long and very cold spell on the East coast things have started to warm up a little bit; but this years January thaw only seems to last a few days, followed by temperatures dipping down into the teens again, with more snow on the way. Some areas in the Central Rockies – most notably the Wasatch Mountains and Front Range in Colorado have received some much needed snowfall for this years MLK weekend (1/12/18-1/15/18). Most of us are wishing to buried in the several feet of snow that has bombarded the Alps this past week, and unless you are lucky enough to be able to fly across the Atlantic for a quick ski weekend, we are going to assume you will be skiing stateside.

Grand Targhee is one of the best places to hit the slopes when it comes to snow conditions this season. With consistent snow since November, Grand Targhee has been a go-to spot for many skiers who have been hit with the drought in the Rockies. Groomers off of the the Dreamcatcher Quad will be packed and smooth if you like that sort of thing, but heading to the Grand means that you are searching for powder. The trees off of the Blackfoot quad are going to be soft and fluffy. Low winds with snow throughout the day on Friday, and a morning snow-fall on Saturday mixed with temps in the mid 20’s make for perfect snow conditions.

Stevens Pass Ski Area, Washington

A Healthy snow-pack in the Pacific Northwest, and temperatures in the high 20’s and low 30’s will make for great skiing at Stevens Pass. Snow is in the forecast for the next few days, and the wide open spaces in Mill Valley will be prime skiing this weekend. Shim’s Meadow and Wild Katz will offer up deep turns, and all of the groomers on the Hogsback Express will feel fast with plenty of coverage to let your skis run.

Schweitzer Mountain, Idaho is not very well known – but if you like non-existent lift lines, plenty of elbow room and skiing powder between lodge-pole pines, it’s time to make yourself familiar with this hidden gem of a ski resort. Tucked away into the Idaho panhandle, Schweitzer is a perfect place to ski for purists. 2,900 acres and 2,400 feet of vertical drop make Schweitzer a must for anyone looking to beat the crowds. Wayne’s Woods always has fresh snow to be found, and skiing off of the Lakeview Triple will offer you short vertical, but plenty of powder turns with heavy snow in the forecast for Friday and Saturday. If you are looking rip some groomers then the Stella lift is the place for you.
