We’ve got suits with plenty of stretch for movement and even coverage for sun protection. Or, maybe you’re just looking for something to lounge on the beach in, we’ve definitely got you covered with trendy style and flattering silhouettes. We’ve got options for both men and women to enjoy the water this season, let’s check out some options for 2017 below.
First, let’s check out a couple of our favorite brands for swimwear. For men, our top brand for boardshorts is O’Neill, and for good reason. O’Neill Boardshorts have been around for a long time, and they reflect that in their classic board short stylings of bright colors, stylish pops, and bold patterns. O’Neill holds their products to the highest standards of durability, comfort, and style. The Hyperfreak technology that is used in their board shorts reflects this commitment. This technology offers Hyperstretch, with 4-way stretch fabric that stretches from any direction giving full mobility. Their Hyperdry tech gives the highest quality DWR coating to keep the shorts drying quickly and reduces uncomfortable chafing. The Hyperfreak technology also offers strong reinforcements on seams to ensure these shorts will last for summers to come. Check out our favorite, the O’Neilll Hyperfreak Heist Boardshorts. This short comes in a variety of color options and bright stripe patterns, ensuring you will stand out on the water. And the Hyperfreak technology will stand up to what you throw at these board shorts all summer long.
Another brand we’re excited about for men’s boardshorts this year is Patagonia. Sure, Patagonia isn’t a new brand, but they’ve definitely stepped up their game when it comes to swimwear. This year’s men’s Patagonia Boardshorts reflect a much more outdoorsy style, with both older and younger looks to appeal to a wide variety of men. Their Stretch Wavefarer Boardshorts offer a more classic true outdoorsmen style with solid colors and a 21-inch inseam. They also offer full stretch and UPF 50+ sun protection to keep you protected and comfortable. If you’re looking for something a little trendier and out there, check out the Men’s Baggies 5in Hybrid Boardshorts. These shorts are the ultra-trendy type of short, hitting about mid thigh. They also have an elastic waistband for easy on and off and come in funky prints. But the best thing about Patagonia board shorts is that they are all Fair Trade certified so you can rest easy buying products that are socially responsible.
Now, let’s look at a couple women’s swim brands. First off we have Next Swimwear, the premier brand for water activities like paddleboarding. This brand calls itself “fashion active” meaning it looks great while still being highly functional and performance driven. Next was built around being active, so it incorporates technology like stretch, support, moisture wicking, UPF sun protection, and quick dry. And their styling is on point. They offer flattering silhouettes that provide better coverage like the Next Good Karma Jump Start Bathing Suit Bottoms. These bottoms offer full coverage for a flattering look on all body types, and they offer more chaffing protection and are comfortable for activities like sitting on paddleboards or in kayaks. Or, if you’re looking for extra support, check out the Next Body Renewal 28 Min Bathing Suit Top. This top comes in bra specified sizes in order to offer extra support, making all outdoor activates more comfortable and let you feel secure in your suit. Next offers a style for everyone.
One of our top women’s brands here at Skis.com is Body Glove swimwear. This brand offers top qualities products that adhere to their motto, “all things water.” This brand was built around water fanatics and it reflects that in unique stylish pieces that are fully functional as well. If you’re looking for standout swimwear look no further. For instance, check out the Body Glove Akela Brizo One Piece Swimsuit. This suit follows the trend of cut out pieces in suits. While still offering great coverage of a piece with sleeves for activities like paddleboarding or kayaking. It combines the qualities of a rash guard with the cuteness of fashion wear and is the hottest style available this year. If you’re looking for something more in the two-piece persuasion take a peek at the Body Glove Urbania Krista Bathing Suit Top. This top has the style of a high neck crop top that are currently all the rage. And with its pop colors and patterns, this swim top could double as an everyday crop top that would pair great with jean shorts. Or just wear it to swim, we don’t mind!
2017 Trends and Styles
Now let’s look at a couple of trends for the 2017 swim season. For men, stretch materials are a must. Yes, stretch has been around for a while. But it was generally used in women’s specific clothing to help with fits. But now stretch has stretched its product base and expanded into men’s clothing because let’s be honest, it makes all clothing more comfortable. And stretch helps with outdoor activities, making swimwear more mobile and conducive to swimming, paddling, and other beach adventures.
Another men’s trend we’re seeing is hybrid shorts. Hybrid shorts are shorts that have all the qualities of a swim short but look like walking shorts. This means they have things like stretch, water resistance and quick-drying, UPF sun protection, and flatlock seams to reduce chafing. But they often also have muted colors, buttons or zips in the front, and toned down styling to look like an everyday short. Some even have extra pockets. It’s the best way to go from the beach to the boardwalk without needing to change
One of the trends we’re seeing with women’s swimwear is the swim tight. It’s somewhere between a yoga pant and a bathing suit bottom. These swim tights are generally a little longer than knee length and are made from swimsuit materials.
They are ultra-stretchy and conform to fit all body types and give great full coverage. This can help with sun protection for long days out on the water and give protection against scrapes from SUP boards. They are still quick drying and tech heavy, but they offer a different look and functionality. They are still lightweight and comfortable for long days in the sun.
