Okay, let me start off by saying that pretty much any ski movie gets me super psyched up, even mediocre ones.  But this year’s Matchstick Production’s film trailer, Fade to Winter, has left me disappointed and even a little depressed.

Let me explain, first and foremost the trailer seems to focus on the idea that there really wasn’t a ton of snow last year (unless you lived in the Boston area apparently) and skiers had to go out and find it or ski on crappy snow to make due.  I understand the mentality, do what it takes for something you love, but isn’t that a very depressing way to express that?  I’m not all wound up for this winter watching skiers talk about lack of snow.

And second, am I the only one who misses the days of goofy ski movies?  I know there are still some ski film companies making some goofy ski movies, but the mainstream seems to have steered away from this and more towards a ‘super serious nature-y too cool to get excited about the awesome line I skied’ theme.  I miss the days of Shane McConkey skiing lines naked just to do it or saucer boy-ing the hell out of a ski movie.  And while no one can replace Shane, I feel like someone should step up and continue the goofball legacy.  Interject some weirdness and stupid fun into ski movies again!

But still, I am very excited to see the new MSP movie for this year as well.  This is just a trailer, and to twist the words of the wise Shane McConkey, watching a bad trailer of a ski movie is still better than a good day at work.  Check it out for yourself and tell us what you think.

Just watched the movie. Not impressed. Should we blame the snow conditions? The best segment was Alaska for sure. Any recommendations for the best ski movie this year? This movie was unfortunately not worth the money. But I am glad to finance MSP’s next movie!
