It’s finally here, springtime!  And that means it’s sunglasses season.  Sure, sunglasses are really a year-round item, but they become even more important in the summer to protect your eyes and enjoy the outdoors.  They’re the perfect fashion accessory, but they also protect you from harmful UV rays keeping you healthy and comfortable on sunny days.  They can even help protect against sunburns and skin cancer, so be sure to pick up a pair this year.

There are a few things to consider when picking out sunglasses.  The first of which is whether or not you want polarized sunglasses.  When considering the differences between polarized and non-polarized the important thing to remember is that when you wear sunglasses your pupils actually dilate, or get bigger, which can allow for harmful UV rays to enter more easily.  So if your sunglasses don’t have good UV protection, they can actually harm your eyes, which is why investing in a good pair of sunglasses is crucial if you spend time outdoors.  And polarized sunglasses offer 100% UV light protection so they will keep you well protected.

Polarized sunglasses also offer additional protection by blocking out horizontal sun glare, meaning you can see your surroundings much clearer.  So when you’re out on the water, driving, or encountering any other reflective surfaces, the sun’s glare won’t enter through your sunglasses and affect your eyes.  Non-polarized sunglasses offer dark lenses that do reduce the light coming through, but they cannot protect against horizontal or reflected light.  All in all, if you’re going to be outside and active for longer periods of time, polarized sunglasses are the best choice to protect you and keep your eyes safe.

Next, it’s important to look at what frames work for you.  On we can help you pick the right shades for your needs with help from our filters, just pick what you’re looking for and see what we have available.  First, you’ll want to decide what size frames you want, large, medium, or small.  There are benefits to all types, smaller frames work better for activities while larger frames can offer a wider field of protection.  But really frame size tends to boil down to preference.  You also may want to consider frame shape, which is also purely a style choice.  The choices available for frame shape are aviator, butterfly, oval, rectangle, rimless, round, shield, and square.  Take some time and see what frame is right for your face and style.

You may also want to consider lens color.  Just like with ski goggles, different lens colors can have different benefits.  Brown lenses can enhance contrast because they block out more blue light, which means they are particularly good for snow sports and hunting in bright light and can improve depth perception.  Red/orange lenses are good for the same sports but in overcast conditions, and they reduce eyestrain.  They are particularly good for long distance driving and offer good road visibility as well. Yellow lenses are great for general use in lower light conditions and can help ease headaches, but they do make it more difficult to see the difference in colors, especially contrasting ones.  Blue or purple lenses are definitely in fashion right now, but they also are great at reducing glare and enhancing color perception.  Gray or black lenses reduce the intensity of light without distorting colors and are great for multipurpose use.  They offer the highest available light reduction, depending on how dark the tint is.  Green lenses are also good for general use, but they also are best at reducing glare while brightening shadows and providing great contrast in low light conditions.  All lenses offer different benefits, the right lens will entirely depend on how you plan to use your sunglasses.

Now that we’ve run through the important features to consider when choosing sunglasses, let’s check out some of our favorites for this summer.
