All the month’s best moments:
Not sure if you heard, but there was a pretty big winter sporting event happening in South Korea this month. Let’s kick off our monthly recap of the happenings in the ski world with some Winter Olympics news:
Mikaela Shiffrin Double Medals in PyeongChang
Team USA’s golden girl Mikaela Shiffrin came into these Olympics with some pretty high expectations. Shiffrin originally planned on competing in all 5 alpine skiing disciplines, and many thought it was possible for Shiffrin to medal in all of them. She started off on the right track, winning gold in the Giant Slalom event (check out her winning run below).
Want to know what it feels like to win gold? Shiffrin was mic’d up for her run, and you can listen to the audio of her as she found out she’s won the gold medal.
Due to last-minute schedule changes that would of put her on short rest, Shiffrin decided against competing in the Downhill and Super-G events. Shiffrin ended up getting 4th in Slalom, typically her strongest event; not bad when you consider she was puking before her first run.
She ended her Olympic performances by earning a silver medal in the Alpine Combined. It’s not five golds like some were (maybe unrealistically) expecting, but two medals in three events is quite a feat regardless. Congratulations, Mikaela.
Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall Win First-Ever USA Cross-Country Gold
With only one cross-country medal in Winter Olympics history (a silver), Team USA has never been a serious medal contender in the sport. Up until this year, that is. The dynamic duo of Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall brought home the gold in the Women’s Team Sprint event with an electric photo finish. Read more about the historic medal here.
Czech Snowboarder Ester Ledecka Wins Gold……In Two Different Sports
The 22-year old Czech snowboarder won gold in the Women’s Super-G. Yes, you read that right: a snowboarder won gold in a skiing event. If that wasn’t impressive enough for you, she added another gold to her haul in the Women’s Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom, becoming the first athlete in Olympic history to medal in two different sports entirely.

Next time your buddy remarks that they think they could totally pull off the same runs these Olympic athletes have been training their entire lives for, show them this video.
And Last but Not Least: Skiing, As Told By Jim Gaffigan
“You don’t want to be seen skiing in a non-skiing coat. How embarrassing!” True that. Comedian Jim Gaffigan went on CBS Sunday Morning and gave us all a few good laughs with his rant on skiing. Watch the video linked here.
