Longtime adventure athlete and filmmaker Jimmy Chin survived an avalanche. He recently sat down with Vice Sports to talk about living through it.
As avid athletes, we all consider the dangers, like an avalanche, when venturing into the unknown, but rarely consider the reality behind them. A couple years back I spent some time mountaineering through Alaska. Some of my most favorite times were spent drinking coffee in the early mornings while listening and watching the mini-avalanches take place across the crevasse fields. It was easy to get wrapped up in the complacency that came with the serenity. We were always aware of the danger, and we safely planned around it, but this is a chilling reminder of how a day can go from beautiful to terrifying in a moment’s notice.
